Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder praised his players for the "brave" win at Watford that has bought him extra time at St James' Park.
The Magpies manager will remain under intense pressure for as long as his side remains in the Premiership relegation zone but the club now has a Carling Cup quarter-final tie to look forward to following a penalty shoot-out victory at Vicarage Road. Newcastle were four minutes from an exit before Scott Parker netted an extra-time equaliser - with that goal perhaps having saved Roeder's job there and then.
He said: "We showed a lot of bravery - and that doesn't mean upending somebody from behind. Bravery is when, if it is not going well for you as an individual, you still make yourself available for the ball."
