England midfielder Kieron Dyer pleaded to be allowed to play in Tuesday's Carling Cup clash with Watford wearing protective goggles, according to manager Glenn Roeder.
The 27-year-old, who damaged an eye in a freak training ground accident just days after making his comeback from a six-month injury lay-off, was desperate to return to action at Vicarage Road.
But Roeder said: "Kieron is frustrated at missing out with his eye problem because he believes he is now fully fit after all his hamstring problems. However, all the medical people said it was not practical and Kieron has accepted that."
