Kenny Dalglish, the former Liverpool manager, has emerged as a possible saviour for the Republic of Ireland national side after Saturday night's humbling 5-2 defeat in Cyprus.
Manager Steve Staunton has vowed to stay put, while the Football Association of Ireland, having awarded the Dundalk man a four-year deal in February, are unlikely to take any drastic action at this juncture.
However, Staunton could be offered a new "international advisor" to replace Sir Bobby Robson, who was apppointed to that role earlier this year but has been unable to fulfil his duties due to health reasons.
According to reports surfacing on Monday morning, Dalglish is the favourite to come on board in a bid to steady the ship.
And the Scot could even be in place before Wednesday evening's meeting with the Czech Republic at Lansdowne Road as Staunton & Co attempt to rescue the Euro 2008 campaign from absolute disaster.
