Manchester united target Fernando Torres has signed a contract extension to keep him at at Atletico Madrid until 2009, news that will come as a blow to the Red Devils, as they had hoped to capture the Spanish International in the January transfer window as a replacement for the departed Ruud Van Nistlerooy
Although Torres is only 22, he is already one of Europe's hottest strikers, starring for Spain during the World Cup and finishing each of the last four seasons in Spain as Athletico's top scorer.
It was thought that interest from many of the top clubs would induce him into a big money transfer but he has repeatedly chosen to stay at the Madrid club, who finished in a disappointing 10th place last season, explaining, "I am delighted because I feel valued at the club and this is further proof. Everything has been agreed and when I return we will look to make it official." Torres is currently with the Spanish squad for the European 2008 qualifiers.
