Players' chief Gordon Taylor maintains there was no need for Chelsea to "wash their dirty linen in public" following William Gallas' departure.
Chelsea took the unprecedented step of issuing a statement which alleged Gallas had threatened to score an own goal if he was selected for their opening game of the season against Manchester City. They also claimed Gallas told them he would get himself sent off or make deliberate mistakes - and had twice refused to play for the club.
Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Taylor believes the whole episode has been unnecessary and leaves a "bad taste in the mouth". Taylor said: "Why do they have to wash their dirty linen in public? I do not see what purpose it serves."
