Arsene Wenger feels the criticism levelled at Theo Walcott over his controversial inclusion in the World Cup squad has been "harsh".
The 17-year-old came off the bench to make his Arsenal debut against Aston Villa on Saturday, and helped set up a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium. Walcott did not play any part in England's disappointing campaign in Germany, with midfielder Steven Gerrard claiming the teenager had "no right" to be in the squad in extracts from his forthcoming book.
Wenger, however, was quick to defend the Gunners' teenage prospect, saying: "I think the criticism he has been given has been harsh. It is a lot of pressure for a very young man to deal with."
