Sunderland manager Niall Quinn has failed in a bid to sign two players from Tottenham, including Irish international Andy Reid.
Reid has been hawked around to other clubs this summer, with Spurs offering the 24-year-old and a lump of cash to Wigan Athletic in exchange for defender Pascal Chimbonda.
That move was rejected, prompting Sunderland to enter the race for the former Nottingham Forest star.
But Quinn has been unable to persuade Spurs to part with both the Irishman and central defender Calum Davenport.
The Black Cats boss said: "We enquired about a couple of players at Spurs. But there was nothing doing. Spurs rejected all our advances."
