Latics sign Valencia

Wigan have agreed a deal to sign Ecuador midfielder Luis Antonio Valencia on a year-long loan from Spanish club Villarreal.

Valencia, 21, has 19 Ecuador caps and featured in this summer's World Cup, including the 1-0 second-round loss to England. Valencia, who can play in the centre or on the right, joined Villarreal last year but had a spell on loan with Recreativo Huelva.

Jewell told the club's official website, www.wiganlatics.co.uk: "Antonio is something new for Wigan. As with most South Americans, he has skill in abundance and combines it with electric pace and a very high work-rate."
