New Sunderland signing Kenny Cunningham has warned his teammates to be wary of their successful pre-season campaign as they warm up for Sunday's Coca-Cola Championship opener against Coventry City.
The Black Cats, now under the tutelage of Cunningham's fellow Irishman Niall Quinn, have posted a 100 per cent record in pre-season with wins over Rotherham United, Forest Green Rovers, Shelbourne and Carlisle United.
But former Birmingham and Ireland skipper Cunningham insists the first real test for Sunderland will come at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday afternoon.
He said: "It's been a good pre-season for us in terms of results but I would add, as a word of caution, that sometimes the pre-season games can be quite misleading.
"Yes, we're pleased at the way it has gone and the fact that we haven't conceded a goal but, no disrespect to any of the clubs we have played in friendlies, we are going to come up against bigger and stronger opposition in the Championship.
"We have to focus 100 per cent on the Coventry game this weekend and not go there thinking we'll be alright because we have had a good pre-season.
"Coventry have strengthened over the summer and are capable of challenging for promotion this time around, so we are going to have to put in a good performance."
