Leeds chairman Ken Bates has hit back at claims from Chelsea that his attack on the London club was a racial slur.
The Barclays Premiership champions have lodged an official complaint with the FA and accused Bates, Chelsea's former owner, of bringing the game into disrepute. Bates branded Chelsea "a bunch of shysters from Siberia" and the London club claim the comment is an attack on the race, religion and nationality of the club's Jewish billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich.
But Bates, writing in his own programme notes for Tuesday night's Carling Cup first-round tie between Leeds and Chester, said: "Whereas previously there was anger at their (Chelsea's) behaviour it now has been replaced by ridicule at their pathetic attempt to deflect attention from the serious disciplinary charges that they are facing, with two more in the pipeline."
