Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes Sir Alex Ferguson will win the battle of wills over Wayne Rooney's World Cup fitness.

The 34-year-old, who will captain Trinidad and Tobago in the World Cup, has been training with his old club and has witnessed Rooney's rehabilitation from his broken metatarsal at first hand. England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is determined to give Rooney every chance of featuring in the tournament, but Yorke believes the United boss will know better than anyone whether he is ready.

"They do not come any more experienced than Sir Alex. I do not want to get involved in the Wayne situation but it seems simple," Yorke said. "If Wayne is fit then he will play, if he is not fit then he won't. Wayne is Manchester United's player and Sir Alex is entitled to do that. Why force a player to play if he is not fit? (United) have got to look after their best interests, the club are paying his wages and that is his bread and butter."
