Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder is hoping Michael Owen can fire England to World Cup glory - and then return to spearhead his club's bid for success.
The Magpies' manager was an interested spectator on Thursday night, as the 26-year-old got 62 minutes under his belt for England B in the 2-1 defeat by Belarus at Reading, in only his first start since December 31. Owen has managed barely half an hour of football for his club this calendar year after fracturing a metatarsal at Tottenham in December, and Roeder was delighted to see him back.
"He just has a God-given talent," said Roeder. "He scores goals - and seven in just 10 starts for Newcastle says it all. That was only the briefest reminder of what is to come. That's why we broke the record transfer fee to get him and it will be great to see him back here after the World Cup."
