It was reported yesterday that Kenny Cunningham was in talks with Steve Bruce over a new contract. However today it has been revealed that the Birmingham captain will be let go by the club. Manager Steve Bruce revealed at the weekend that Cunningham was the only senior out-of-contract player who may stay on, with Stan Lazaridis, Jamie Clapham, Nico Vaesen, Chris Sutton and Mario Melchiot all heading through the exit-door.
However, it now appears that even dependable stopper - the club captain who has spent the past four years at St Andrews - is surplus to requirements as Bruce begins a momentous rebuilding process for life in the Coca-Cola Championship.
Bruce said: "It's always hard when you have to say goodbye to such great servants but, unfortunately, tough decisions have to be made when you find yourselves in the situation we are in."
