Hamburg and Holland midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has undergone surgery to remove a metal pin from his left ankle.
The operation is Van der Vaart's second in just four months, and was necessitated by an infection that has forced the Holland international back onto the sidelines. The pin was inserted last December to help stabilise a broken ankle, but complications in the healing process have forced the former Ajax midfielder back under the knife.
His ankle has now fully recovered from the break, and the 23-year-old made a further seven appearances for the Bundesliga high-flyers before the infection set in.
