After pulling up in the warm up before the second city derby on Sunday, Matthew Upson was diagnosed with a ruptured achilles which is expected to sideline Birmingham's key defender for at least 6 months. With Upson's contract expiring at the end of the season the Blues have taken up the option to keep Upson at the club until 2008.

Talks between the player and club were rumoured to be on hold due to Birmingham's current relegation battle. Upson may have looked to move away if the club were relegated but Birmingham snapped at the chance to secure his future. This will be a boost for Upson as he now knows that he will have a club next season.

Manager Steve Bruce is confident Upson will recover as he has before in an injury spattered career. "We have already exercised the two-year option", Bruce told the clubs official website, "He's come back from breaking his leg and doing his cruciate knee ligaments before and he will come back again."

Upson was due to make his comeback against Villa on Easter Sunday after groin and pelvic injuries had kept him out since early February.
