Stuart Pearce has admitted he would be 'surprised' if Luiz Felipe Scolari was appointed as Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor as England coach.
Scolari has emerged as a shock favourite to take over after the World Cup, with high profile members of the FA recruiting panel, particularly David Dein, believed to be championing his cause. However, while he respects Scolari's track record, Pearce, himself one of the early front-runners for the job, thinks such an appointment would be out of tune with public opinion.
Pearce said: "The groundswell of opinion from the general public is that a British-based manager will get the job. The FA probably pick up on what the general public want as well as what they see with their own eyes and what they hear with their own ears when they interview. Everyone I speak to in the street wants a British-based manager."
