Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer suffered a suspected broken cheekbone in Middlesbrough's FA Cup semi-final defeat by West Ham United on Sunday, raising fears for his World Cup place. Schwarzer picked up the injury when he collided with West Ham striker Dean Ashton.
The two came together in an aerial challenge during the first half of Middlesbrough's 1-0 defeat at Villa Park, Birmingham.
Schwarzer, who was due to play in Thursday's UEFA Cup semi-final second leg against Steaua Bucharest, had to be replaced by reserve keeper Bradley Jones.
"A suspected fractured cheekbone is a big blow and a disappointment," Boro manager Steve McClaren told Sky Sports.
"We will get it assessed tomorrow."
Asked if a broken cheekbone normally meant a minimum four-week absence, McClaren said: "Yes, that's right. But Brad Jones came in and did a very good job."
McClaren made little of Ashton's challenge, saying: "I didn't see it, and haven't as yet. It's a typical challenge, the ball was there and these things happen."
Australia open their World Cup campaign in Germany on June 12 against Japan, before going on to face holders Brazil and Croatia in Group F.
