Middlesbrough through after thriller

28 april 2006, 00:07

Middlesbrough fort back amazingly from 2-0 down at the Riverside to beat Steaua Bucharest 4-2 and progress to the final of the UEFA Cup.

Massimo Maccarone once more was the hero in Europe as his last minute goal saw them through. Boro were 2-0 down after just 24 minutes making it 3-0 on aggregate and the game was seemingly over after goals from Nicolae Dica and Goian. Early substitute Maccarone pulled one back before half time and in form Mark Viduka and defender Chris Riggot scored after the interval to set up an intense finish to the semi.

Staeua pulled everyone back but failed to prevent the Italian getting his head to a Stewart Downing cross to complete a remarkable comeback. The succes thus far in Europe for the club has put a silver lining on a reasnoably poor league season and they will certainly be up for the final in Eindhoven.
