Managers' union chief John Barnwell has re-stated the preference for an English coach to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson after the World Cup.
After weeks of speculation which suggested Martin O'Neill was going to get the job, and then Steve McClaren, it has now emerged Luiz Felipe Scolari is the man some senior FA figures want for the job. Scolari's background as a World Cup winner with Brazil and a European Championship runner-up with Portugal makes him a stand-out candidate, but his appointment would not be universally welcomed.
"As an organisation, we have consistently said the same thing over the past month, two months and six months," said Barnwell. "Our stance is clear. It is in our interests to promote coaching and management education in this country and to improve standards. It is the FA's responsibility to do that too. To that end, we would prefer an English coach to be the England manager."
