Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce is confident that come next season Joey Barton will still be with the club.

Pearce shrugged off claims that Arsenal and Middlesborough are both tracking the 23-year-olds's situation at the Eastlands club. Barton had earlier in the season put in a transfer request with City but has since withdrawn that but still has yet to sign a new contract with the club. It has been suggested that Pearce may choose to offload the livewire player seeing as he only has 2 years remaining on his contract and would hate to see one of his key players leave on a free. The Man City boss has since stifled these rumours saying that he has no wish to sell a player who still remains in his long term plans.

Pearce, who turned 44 on Monday, said "We offered Joey a new contract because we want him here and we are still in the same position. From day one, I have said I want Joey to Stay at the club. I want him to sign a new contract and for us all to move forward."
