Fabien Barthez paid tribute to a "pillar of French football" after hearing of Zinedine Zidane's impending retirement.
Real Madrid midfielder Zidane on Tuesday announced he will quit the game after this summer's World Cup, bringing to an end a glorious 18-year playing career.
Barthez, who played alongside 'Zizou' in Les Bleus sides which won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championships, said: "He is a friend but also the player of the century when you look at what he has achieved in his career. He is a pillar of French football. But I understand and respect his decision."
