Everton boss David Moyes insists that his team must win Sunderland on Saturday, without thinking that if the Black Cats lose, they are relegated.
Three points are all that the Scot is hoping for at the moment, just to ensure survival in the Premiership next season.
"Sunderland have probably realised for a long time their situation has been difficult. I don't think anyone really likes seeing sides go down but that's the way football is," Moyes told Sky Sports News.
Moyes also admitted that Everton were in that situation at the start of the season, and can relate to the problems that Sunderland are having.
"We were in that position for a while at the start of the season so I'll be sympathetic to Sunderland, they're a great club with great supporters, but at Everton Football Club, if we have to be hard and put them down, then so be it."
