Stephen Elliott will have a scan today to determine the extent of his hamstring and knee injuries. The Sunderland striker remains in the treatment room and the Black Cats reckon a scan is the best way forward as they look to get to the bottom of the problem.
Elliott's attempts to return to training have been hampered by him complaining of pains in the hamstring and knee areas. It is another blow to the Republic of Ireland man who has had an injury-hit campaign, making just 16 appearances for the Black Cats this season.
Elliott started in Kevin Ball's first game in charge, against Wigan earlier this month, but broke down with a hamstring injury after the game and since has complained of knee pain. Ball said: "There's still an ongoing problem that the physios are looking into.
"He's going for a scan. We're not sure about the injury. We'll get the results, look at them and see what the next step is. He might be back in training later this week or next week. We've got to do what's right for him. I'd rather have him for six games than push him for Everton and have him missing after that."
Elliott, who has also suffered with back problems this term, has scored two Premiership goals for the Black Cats. "Having Stephen out is a blow because he gives you something different," said Ball. "He gives you that threat, he gets in behind, he's got an eye for a goal and a spectacular one as well.
"From my point of view it's disappointing. But it happens, you get on with it and it gives someone else a chance."
