Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has insisted that he must play for England in tomorrow night's crucial match against Uruguay, despite The Reds boss, Rafael Benitez praying that he wouldn't.

England manager Sven Goran Eriksson looks set to pair Gerrard up with Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard in the heart of the midfield. However reports have claimed that the partnership is not working, despite Lampard and Gerrard finishing second and third in the European Football of the Year awards.

"It's not just because the game is at Anfield. Every time you get the chance to play for your country you want to play. I understand Rafa being cautious and wanting to be careful with me because we've got some massive games coming up for Liverpool. But this is a big friendly on Wednesday, it's preparation for the World Cup, and I want be part of it," explained the Gerrard.

The Liverpool captain has also admitted that Lampard and his partnership have seen better days. "You will see better games from me and Frank. I know there has been a lot of talk of it but I'm sure the more we play together in training and in the games coming up the better we will get. Me and Frank are confident if we do get selected to play alongside each other we can make it work,'' Gerrard said, speaking to Sky Sports News.

Sven Goran Eriksson has hinted that he will play Gerrard tomorrow night, but only for 45 minutes. "I have to listen to club managers; he said that because he is worried Steven Gerrard had too many games in one year. I hope he will play 45 minutes," Eriksson said.
